A mother bear was roasting hot dogs over the campfire and a baby cub was sleeping in a sleeping bag. The mother bear roared when she saw Mr. Kirkland. Adan is a bus driver in Freemont City, Nevada. He works the morning shift from 5:30 to 1:30. His bus route is Route 26, which runs east and west along Emerson Street. His route is busy, but it is in a nice part of town.
Adan likes his job because he gets off work early. He works four hours on Saturdays, but he is off on Sundays. He usually spends Sundays with his family.
Next year, Adan will turn 62 and he can retire. His wife wants him to work for another three years because in three years their house will be paid off. Their bills will be much lower then. Adan has worked hard for the past 30 years, and he wants to retire as soon as possible. He’s not worried about money. What should Adan do?

Mrs. Sanchez is an ESL teacher. She works in the computer lab at an adult education center. She is seven months pregnant with her first child.
Mrs. Sanchez is worried because her husband started a new business, and it is not making much money. They have been using her income to pay the bills, but it isn’t enough. They can’t afford to pay for health insurance much longer.

Fire fighters arrived ten minutes ago, and one is using an axe to break the front door. A neighbor said that an elderly woman lives in the house. The woman is partially deaf and can’t hear very well. Her bedroom is on the second floor.
The fire fighters are worried because they don’t see the woman. The neighbor tried calling her when the fire started, but there was no answer. AMERICAN FLAG

The American flag is red, white, and blue. It has 13 stripes and 50 stars. The stars are white and are located in a field of blue. The stripes are horizontal and are red and white. Seven of them are red and six of them are white.

MEMORIAL DAY

The last Monday of May is Memorial Day. It is a special holiday to honor soldiers who have died in military service to their country. Friends and relatives visit cemeteries to put flags, wreaths, or flowers on the graves of soldiers. Special Memorial Day services are held in some cities. Politicians give speeches and bands play patriotic music.
Memorial Day is also the start of the summer recreational season in America. Many families have picnics or backyard barbeques. Some people watch a car race called the Indianapolis 500. Most schools close for summer vacation around Memorial Day. Families start planning their summer vacations just before or after Memorial Day.

MILITARY UNIFORMS

There are five military branches in the United States: Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard. Each branch has its own special uniforms. New soldiers are given an everyday uniform and a dress uniform when they join a branch of the military. These uniforms include special hats, helmets, and patches. New soldiers are also given boots, dress shoes, and socks.
There is a law that says military uniforms must be made in the U.S.A. from materials that are produced in the U.S.A. It is called the Berry Amendment. In the picture, the soldier on the left is in the Navy and the soldier on the right is in the Army. They are wearing military uniforms.
Some soldiers earn medals to wear on their uniforms. When a soldier has many medals, we say that he or she is “highly decorated”.

MOTHER'S DAY CELEBRATION

Su is a single mother with two young children. Her son is seven years old, and her daughter is six. They live in a two-bedroom apartment in San Francisco, California. Su is a cashier at a Korean restaurant. Unfortunately, the restaurant is open on Mother’s Day, and Su has to work the morning shift from 6:30 to 2:30. Su’s children are going to stay with her sister while she is at work.
Su’s sister is going to help the children buy a pretty card and a flower for their mom. They are also going to make a special Mother’s Day dinner with beef, rice, and salad. After dinner, the children are going to clear the table and wash the dishes. Su and her family don’t have much money, but they have found an affordable way to celebrate Mother’s Day.

PICTURE DICTIONARY

Benito is an ESL student at Lakeshore Adult Education Center. He is in a beginning level class.
Every morning, Benito’s teacher reads a page of vocabulary words from the picture dictionary. After the teacher reads the words, the students look at the pictures and copy the words into their notebooks. When everyone is finished, they practice reading the words with a partner. Finally, the teacher selects a student to stand in front of the class and read the words aloud.

3 green onions, chopped
1 c. of celery, chopped
1 c. mayonnaise
2 Tbs. sweet pickle relish
2 Tbs. yellow mustard
1 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. black pepper
1/2 tsp. celery seeds Serves 6 people

Directions
1. Cook the potatoes in boiling water for 40 minutes or until they are tender. Drain and cool.
2. Peel the potatoes and cut them into 1 inch pieces.
3. Chop the egg whites (not the yolks).
4. In a large bowl, mix together the potatoes, chopped egg whites, 1/2  teaspoon salt, the chopped celery, and the green onions.
5. Use a fork to mash the yolks in a small bowl. Add in the remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt, mayonnaise, pickle relish, yellow mustard, pepper,
and celery seeds. Stir until well blended.
6. Gently stir the mayonnaise mixture into the potatoes.
7. Cover and chill for at least 2 hours or overnight.

REAL ESTATE AGENT

Margret is a real estate agent in West Valley, Utah. She is at a home on Baker Street and is waiting for her clients to arrive. She is going to show them a three-bedroom house.
The house has a large kitchen, lots of closets, and a large backyard. The price of the house is $375,000, which is a good price for the area. Her clients will need to put twenty percent down. The seller has another family that is interested in the house, so Margaret needs to work fast if her clients want the house.

ROBOT MOTHERS

Being a mother is difficult. Mothers take care of children and do housework every day, even on the weekends. Many mothers also work or attend school. When mothers are at school or work, they often leave their children with a babysitter.

NEW YORK CITY CAB DRIVER

Marty drives a cab in New York City. He works six days a week from 5:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. He doesn’t always get to eat when he’s hungry or go to the restroom when he needs to go.
Driving a cab is difficult. Traffic in the city is often slow and there are many accidents and construction sites drivers have to go around. Driving a cab is also dangerous. When it rains or snows the roads are slippery. Sometimes criminals steal the cab driver’s money.
Most of Marty’s passengers are nice. They tip him twenty percent of the cab fare. Marty likes his job, but lately he’s been feeling tired from working twelve hour shifts.

FAMILY VACATION

The Chow family is on vacation. They are staying in Hawaii for five days. They rented a hotel room on the beach in Maui.
Everyone is excited. The kids want to go on a submarine tour and see the fish in the Pacific Ocean. Mrs. Chow wants to go shopping and take a sunrise tour of Haleakala Crater. Mr. Chow wants the family to go hiking in the morning, visit museums in the afternoon, and have a barbecue on the beach in the evening. He is worried about spending too much money.
Mrs. Chow thinks her husband worries too much about money. She wants him to relax and forget about money while they are on vacation. What should Mrs. Chow do? How can she solve her problem?
